Compost at Home

Dao Huu Binh

After graduating from the Tay Bac University of Economics, I studied on a Master’s Course at the National Economics University. Currently, I am a lecturer in the Faculty of Agronomy and Forestry at Tay Bac University. I have been involved in many projects related to the issue of coping with climate change, such as: researching the value chain in Moc Chau plums; developing stoves for Nhop village; and the creation of guidelines for making mushrooms for pupils of Thuan Chau High School. In my current research, I am interested in the responses to the challenges of climate change, particularly from the perspective of solutions using local resources that also help economic and community development.

Vision

Our project aims to improve the living environment and quality of life for farmers of Nhop villages by providing training and support activities. Project activities will include technical training for farmers on the making and the using of compost for agriculture production. In addition, the project site will also act as experimental and experiential learning site for students of Tay Bac University to practice their knowledge and skills in agriculture and forestry. Results and findings gained from the project will be fed into the training programme and resources at the university.

What's the project about

The project will support 74 households in Nhop village in the Thuan Chau district in Son La Province with techniques for making compost from domestic waste, agricultural waste and animal manure. The project aims to change the mindsets of ethnic people in the northern mountainous region of Vietnam, raising their awareness of environmental protection and soil conservation methods using low-cost compost to replace the use of expensive chemical fertilizers. At the same time, the successful implementation of the project will result in a wealthier and greener community, improving the quality of life for village residents. There is great scope to spread the project to other villages with strong support from the local agricultural network.

E-idea and me

Being part of E-idea, in addition to the funding to implement the project, I have the opportunity to gain more knowledge and skills as well as connections with networks of similarly-minded people and my E-idea peers. This E-idea forum is very important. I think I will learn a lot by sharing with international friends about environmental problems and solutions, and also have the opportunity to improve my English.
