After graduating in Environment Sciences from the Faculty of the Hanoi University of Sciences, I worked for the Institute for Water and Environment, which is affiliated to the Academy for Water Resources of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Working for the institute provided opportunities to approach and implement projects on environment assessment and other research. I have finished my Master’s in the area of new energy and the environment.

Our goal is to provide urban Hanoi with gymnastic equipment for public areas, which, at the same time, contributes to the purification of polluted lakes in the city by utilising energy generated from the exercise machines. In some countries, there are currently some model projects which use gym machines to generate energy for other activities. In Vietnam, at the moment, people undertake gymnastic activities only to improve their health. We propose a new model, combining a health improvement initiative with a lake water treatment system to solve our pollution problem. Lakes play an important role in urban spaces, providing areas for people to relax and exercise. However, in Hanoi, lakes have become seriously polluted. Governmental authorities as well as domestic and foreign organizations have invested much in lake water treatment activities but pollution is still very high. At the same time, people's desire for daily physical exercise has increased considerably as living standards have risen.

Our project will utilize the energy generated by gym activities to provide energy for the pumping of water in the water treatment system. The pump is connected to the gym machines and when the gym machines are operated, lake water will be pumped into the water treatment system. A plant from the cannaceae family is used for the purification of the polluted water to the required environmental standards. The system will be placed on the ground or float on the lake depending on the project site condition. People of all ages can use the project exercise machines including women and children. Users can improve the quality of the lake water quality while improving their health. Also, by directly joining the process for the lake water treatment, their awareness of environment protection will be improved.

We are expecting that in the first 6 six months we will produce successfully the gym machines linking into our water treatment system, and the next 6 months testing the effectiveness of the models developed. E-idea will ensure that we can turn our project idea into reality with a pilot programme installed in a small lake in Hanoi. In addition, the E-idea experience will provide us with the techniques and skills to implement our project effectively. The E-idea competition will provide opportunities for us to extend our network and to share approaches and meaningful ideas to solve energy and environmental problems. The international networking provided by E-idea is an opportunity for us to promote our project, bring our idea to a world audience, and to exchange experiences in implementing our project.
